Bingo in Britain
|
Bingo has always been a very popular game in the United Kingdom from the days when the former dancing halls were converted into online bingo halls. The game, which evolved from the Italian National Lottery, is based on ninety numbers and is played on a rectangular ticket with nine vertical columns and three horizontal rows. Each row has five numbers in it with the balance of the spaces left blank. The bingo game is played in membership only clubs which is the only place where the game can be played for monetary prizes. Bingo played in other places cannot have cash prizes.
The popularity of the game is given in the fact that there is a National casino game that is second only to the Lotto in terms of popularity. The National Game is played on a weekly basis with more than five hundred bingo clubs linking together for the game. There are also other national and regional casino games played on a twice a day basis for which the bingo clubs link together. In spite of the popularity of the game in Britain, the government is hurting the game. First the new smoking bans go into effect in a few months which will lead to decreased attendance and revenues to such a points that certain bingo operators are already announcing closings in anticipation of the ban. The game is also being hurt by the imposition of both the value added tax and the profits tax, making bingo the only gambling game that is double taxed.
